Welcome Back to LA

After 4 days in the wilderness we had to come back to reality.  In LA that means traffic.

General Sherman Revisited

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I promise this is the last tree
picture, at least until I go back.

Waterfall

The highlight of the trip was definitely this waterfall/swimming pool.
We spent the better part of a day here and camped nearby.

Sequoia

Ok. I am sure you are sick of tree pictures. I guess if you have the
chance you should visit the forest, then you will maybe understand.

Firescars

This "little" sequoia shows scars from recent fires. Redwood canyon
is used as a research area where they use controlled burns to manage
the forest. Sequoia seeds won't germinate unless they get the heat of
a fire.

Really Big Tree

This is the entire General Sherman Tree with Jessica standing at the
base. Look closely.

Look Dad, Snow!

Los Angeles gets much of its water from the Sierra Nevada mountain range (http://wallihan.blogspot.com/2009/02/water-rationing-in-la.html).  This year we had a lot of snow and expect many reservoirs to be replenished as the snow continues to melt.  Here is just a bit left over at 6500 ft where we were visiting.

General Sherman Tree

The General Sherman Tree is the biggest living tree in the world by
volume and weight. Despite the top being dead so that it cannot grow
taller, it adds enough wood each year to make an average 60 ft tall
tree.

Bear Vault

We carried food in a bear vault and stowed it away from the tent each
night, but it was never touched by a bear. I think it is a conspiracy
to sell bear vaults.

Backpacking in Sequoia National Park

Jessica and I spent 3 days and 2 nights backpacking through Redwood
Canyon in Sequoia National Park.

Wolf Cubs

Jacob and his den became the Wolf Den as the school year ended.

Midsummer Night

In Norway they celebrate midsummer night on June 23. They celebrate
by riding around in boats and lighting bonfires.
