We followed the Bear River out of Bear Lake to Soda Springs. At Soda Springs we crossed to the Portneuf River and followed that to Pocatello and the Snake River.
Prior to being diverted to fill ancient Lake Bonneville, it is believed that the Bear River was a tributary to the Snake River along the path we were driving and the Portneuf was a tributary to the Bear River.
The Bear River may have connected to the Portneuf River at one time. |
We took a side trip to Red Rock Pass to see where Lake Bonneville breached and started the Bonneville Flood.

The geyser at Soda Springs goes off every hour, on the hour. A feat of punctuality that would not be possible without a little human input.

This route was also part of the Oregon Trail, a route used to reach the Willamette Valley and Portland in the late 1800s.
