There are some taxis in Chiang Mai but they tend to service only the
high end hotels. Public transportation in the form of buses or rail
does not exist. To get around you need to take a songtau or a tuk tuk.
The songtau is a small pickup with a bench on either side of the bed.
When the benches get full people just hang off the back. There are
songtaus that serve as buses with predefined routes. These are either
yellow or green depending on which of the two routes you take. There
are also red songtaus which can be hired privately. These take the
place of cabs, serve as school buses and tour buses. When Shelly and
Brett are not driving us around, we take a songtau.
